Sequential Art (Number 1)

C.C. Russell

In the first panel of the graphic novel adaptation of that year, the sun rises between tall buildings that probably no longer stand—beginning en medias res as any good story should. Simple like that, though. These severe buildings, the sun between the severe lines of architecture. Just clean-line art in ink, some crosshatched shading. No color. No speech balloons rising from anyone’s mouth. No words just yet. Just trash blowing down the street. People shuffling along in the shadows. No traffic. Quiet like this. Just light and its echoes between this brutal steel and glass. Just this hush. Just this.
